Rain and heat keep taking turns, and Aedes mosquitoes love that. This year dengue cases in Johor have jumped. If you live in a rented room or shared house in Senai, this is not news to skim past, because most mosquito breeding sites are found in residential areas, which means the places where we live.
Information as of 30 Sep 2026. Case numbers change every week; check the Ministry of Health (KKM) for the latest.
How bad is it?
- Johor: 8,639 dengue cases in the first 32 weeks of 2026, against 4,140 in the same period of 2025. That is an increase of about 108 to 109 per cent, depending on the report (The Star, 22 Aug 2026; KKM statement reproduced by Dewan Kosmik DBP, 21 Aug 2026).
- Nationwide: 58,079 cases up to Epidemiological Week 32 (ME32) 2026, up 56.2 per cent on 2025, with 55 deaths (KKM source above).
- Kulai and Senai: in April 2026 (ME14), The Star reported four hotspots in Kulai: Bukit Batu, Kulai, Sedenak and Senai. That is an early-year picture, not a current figure. We have no up-to-date area data for Senai, so do not assume your area is safe.
The state health official Ling Tian Soon said authorities are adding fogging and premises inspections, and local councils will organise gotong-royong clean-ups. He urged the public to spend at least 10 minutes cleaning their homes and surroundings, and not to rely on fogging alone.

Why are shared houses at higher risk?
KKM says more than 70 per cent of Aedes breeding sites are still found in residential areas, and asks everyone to set aside at least 10 minutes every week to inspect and destroy breeding sites in and around the home.
In a shared house the problem is that everyone assumes someone else will do it. The bucket in the bathroom, flower pots outside, an old tyre by the fence: nobody feels it is their job. So the most effective method is a rotation.
The 10-minute weekly checklist
Based on the KKM Info Sihat guide:
- Throw away or empty anything that can hold water: tins, bottles, plastic containers, old tyres.
- Cover water tanks and rain-collection containers.
- Empty flower pots and their saucers every week.
- Keep roof gutters flowing, not clogged with leaves.
- Empty and scrub buckets (especially in bathrooms or wash areas) before refilling.
- Keep doors and windows closed so mosquitoes stay out.

How to split the work between housemates
- Make a weekly rota (for example Saturday morning, 10 minutes). Stick it on the kitchen wall.
- Give one person per zone: inside, bathroom, outside.
- Take before and after photos if needed, to avoid arguments.
- If something is outside your area (roof gutters, water tank), tell the landlord instead of leaving it.
A sample rota (feel free to copy)
| Day | Zone | 10-minute task | |---|---|---| | Saturday, morning | Outside the house | Empty pots, saucers, tins and bottles; check roof gutters | | Saturday, morning | Bathroom and kitchen | Empty and scrub buckets; cover water containers | | Sunday, afternoon | Your own room | Check containers in the room; remove standing water |
Rotate people every week. What matters is not a pretty rota, but that it gets done every week without fail.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for fogging. Fogging is done by the authorities, but Johor health officials themselves say it cannot be the only method.
- Thinking "it's not my house". You live there, so you share the job.
- Ignoring a fever for a few days for fear of losing a day's pay. Dengue treated late can become serious.
- Cleaning only inside. Breeding sites are often outside: pots, tins, bottles, gutters.
What to ask your landlord
- Are the roof gutters and water tank checked and cleaned?
- Can you ask for window screens or a repair if a window is damaged?
- Who do you contact if there is standing water you cannot fix yourself?

Dengue symptoms: when to see a doctor
According to KKM Info Sihat, symptoms usually appear 5 to 6 days after a bite:
- High fever, headache, backache
- Joint pain, nausea and vomiting, eye pain
- Rash
Warning signs: easy bruising, or bleeding under the skin, from the nose or from the gums. These need treatment immediately. Johor health officials also advise anyone with a high fever to get screened promptly at a clinic or hospital. Do not wait for the fever to "go away on its own".

Protecting yourself
- Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved clothes.
- Apply mosquito repellent on exposed skin.
- Use mosquito coils or electric devices indoors.
- Keep doors and windows closed.
FAQ
Is fogging enough to stop dengue? No. Johor health officials themselves advise the public not to rely on fogging alone. Destroying breeding sites remains a key part.
How much time does KKM suggest for checking? KKM asks for at least 10 minutes every week. Johor health officials mention at least 10 minutes cleaning the home and surroundings.
Is Senai a risk area? In April 2026 Senai was listed among the Kulai hotspots. We have no current area-level data, so assume the risk is still there and look after your house.
I have had a fever for three days. What should I do? See a doctor or clinic for screening. If there is bleeding or easy bruising, get treatment immediately.
Who is responsible if the water tank or roof gutter has problems? Ask your landlord. For areas you use every day (buckets, pots, rubbish), it is a shared responsibility among residents.
